As a builder you are mostly likely interested in qualifying for the Energy Efficient Home Credit (for Builders), to qualify your homes for ENERGY STAR certification, or to obtain LEED-H verification. In all cases, you will be interested in obtaining a rating, although both the ENERGY STAR and LEED-H verification have additional requirements.

- The ENERGY STAR certification requires two site visits by the rater, one pre-drywall for the insulation and thermal boundary inspection, and one upon completion of construction to test ducts and air flow.
- The Energy Efficient Home Credit (Form 8908) provides a $2,000 federal tax credit to builders whose new homes must use no more than 50% of the energy used by a home built to 2004 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) standards. While its requirements are stringent, many homes will qualify. More information about the builder tax credit can be found at RESNET.
- The LEED for Homes (LEED-H) verification is a thorough and detailed process that in almost all cases must be initiated before construction and during design.
